Mayonnaise sauces for that inner gourmet chef

The saying goes that the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach - and we couldn’t agree more! In fact, all you need is a jar of good mayonnaise and your family will be eating out of your hands!

Think of it this way, if you were competing in a food competition with Siba Mtongana, Gordon Ramsay or Nigella Lawson and you presented one of these sauces, you’d probably reign supreme.

These sauces using Hellmann’s mayonnaise are simply LEGEN…wait for it…DARY!

Hollandaise sauce

Serves: 2-4

  • 125 ml reduced oil mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp. (30 ml) fresh lemon juice
  • 125 ml sour cream
  • 1 tbsp. (15 ml) fresh dill
  • 1 ½ tbsp. mustard powder
  • Pinch of salt

Blend all the ingredients together until the dill is fine and you have a smooth consistency. Now pour over freshly poached eggs, grilled mushrooms or even fresh tomatoes. Yum!

Garlic basil mayo

Mixing herbs with mayo gives it a unique flavour that can be added to just about any meal! And most cooks know that garlic can practically make any dish taste better.

Serves 6-8

  • ½ tsp garlic powder or 2-3 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 250 g fresh basil leaves, torn into pieces
  • 2 tbsp. (30 ml) lemon juice
  • 500 ml light mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp. (5 ml) salt
  • ½ tsp. ground black pepper

Blend these ingredients well until smooth and creamy. Enjoy! You can add this to make a yummy tuna or pilchard sandwich or a healthy green salad.

Tofu and cashew

Serves: 4

If you love Southeast Asian cuisine then you’ll find this sauce irresistible. It’s also quite easy to make so you’ll spend less time in the kitchen and more time enjoying the meal with your loved ones.

  • 350 g tofu
  • 1 tsp. (5 ml) sugar
  • 1 tsp. (5 ml) lemon juice
  • 1 tsp. (5 ml) mustard
  • 125 ml cashew paste
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ¼ tsp. wasabi paste

Blend all the ingredients together (except the wasabi paste and sugar) for 2 minutes. Aim for a light and creamy consistency. Now add the sugar and wasabi paste and blend for another 1 minute. Add this sauce to a delicious steak baguette sandwich and a dollop of mayo and you’ll be licking your lips!
